The linen: same fibre, different looks
Both brands sell pre-washed 100% French flax linen of a very similar weight: Beddie’s sheets are 170gsm and Sheet Society’s are 165gsm, a difference you’re unlikely to feel.
The difference is design. Sheet Society offers many plain linen colours as well as stripes, ginghams and some prints. Beddie keeps its Ivy linen to Raspberry, Navy, Oatmeal and Apple, plus Natural Gingham. Beddie’s florals and prints are cotton only. Beddie’s linen also carries European Flax certification, which traces the fibre from Western European fields to the finished product.
At list price a Queen linen fitted sheet is A$159.95 at Beddie and A$180 at Sheet Society, and a Queen quilt cover is A$250 at both. Sheet Society discounts often, so its price on the day can be lower.
The cotton: both smooth sateen
Beddie’s cotton and Sheet Society’s Eden range are the same kind of sheet: long-staple cotton in a sateen weave, smooth with a soft lustre.
Sheet Society quotes a 400 thread count for Eden and Beddie’s sateen is 450. Don’t read much into the gap: Choice and other testers point out that thread count is easily inflated, and fibre length and weave matter more. If you want a crisper, matte sheet instead, Sheet Society also sells percale (organic and stonewashed) and Beddie doesn’t.
A Queen fitted sheet is A$89.95 at Beddie and A$100 at Sheet Society’s list price.
Range and design
Sheet Society is the department store of the two; Beddie is the specialist.
Sheet Society sells around ten fabric families, from bamboo and jersey to flannelette, corduroy and velvet, plus kids’ bedding, quilts, towels and sleepwear. Beddie makes two fabrics, cotton sateen and French linen, and puts its effort into original prints: retro florals such as Flower Child, Petal, Bloom and Nanna’s Kiss, stripes and bold colours like Mellow Yellow and Moss Green, plus limited-edition Parlour pillowcases.
Fit and construction
Both brands have thought about fit. The differences are small but noticeable when you make the bed.
- Quilt covers
- Both close with a hidden zip. Beddie’s also have internal corner ties, which hold the insert in place so it doesn’t slide into one end.
- Fitted sheet depth
- Both have 50cm walls on Queen and larger sizes, enough for most pillow-top mattresses.
- Orientation
- Beddie sews “long side” and “short side” labels into every fitted sheet. Sheet Society uses an end-of-bed marker. Both stop you guessing which way it goes.
What a full Queen linen bed costs
At list prices Beddie is a little cheaper for a full Queen linen bed. During a Sheet Society sale it can go the other way.
